Rummelsburg Bay & Stralau Peninsula
Explore the former branch of the Spree with us!
Rummelsburg Bay
Rummelsburg Bay (also known as Rummelsburg Sea) is an approx. 2 km long bay on the Spree in Berlin, located between the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (Stralau Peninsula) and Lichtenberg (Rummelsburg). At the South, where it connects with the Spree, you will see the two small islands “Kratzbruch” and “Liebesinsel”, both of which are protected.
On a canoe or kayak tour, you can experience the beauty of this unique place up close and enjoy the view to the fullness.
Stralau Peninsula
Many centuries ago, a former island in the Spree was filled in to create the Stralau Peninsula, which was home to a glass factory, beverage production and chemical industry. Shipping and the industrial use of the shore resulted in high levels of pollution. At the end of the 1990s, a 250 m wide sheet pile wall was installed to prevent further pollution of the Spree. An 18 m wide opening was left in this sheet pile wall to allow shipping traffic to continue.
An approximately 3 km long riverside path leads around the Stralau Peninsula. On the north side, you have a view of Rummelsburg Bay and on the south side, you can see the Island of Youth, the Ferris wheel in Spree Park and the expansive Treptower Park. Discover this idyllic place with us – on a canoe or kayak tour – and look forward to more stories about this exciting peninsula.
